Kumon's founder was a math teacher and the original study plan he developed was in pure mathematics. While the program has evolved considerably, it remains successful in enabling Riverbend Kumon to provide children in Edmonton with necessary math skills. The math program remains our most widely attended and recognized feature.
Kumon Math is a comprehensive program that develops the skills needed to help a child progress from basic counting to calculus. If a student needs their fingers to add or a calculator to do basic math, then it is almost certain they will struggle with the more advanced concepts.
At higher levels, it is common for students to have trouble simplifying fractional expressions in algebra because they have not mastered basic calculations. The Kumon Method develops proficiency at every level, so Kumon students build the solid foundation they need to advance more confidently through their school's math curriculum.
With a focus on strengthening mental maths skills, children learn to perform calculations without the use of calculators. Building on these abilities, we support mathematical development at all stages, from counting to calculus. If there is a specific topic you wish to address, simply contact us and we will happily discuss the subject.
Students can usually begin Kumon as early as age 3; and, although most of our students are in pre-K to grade 12, it is not unusual to have adult students attending Kumon to upgrade skills for post-secondary studies or just to keep ahead of their children!
Ultimately, the program is for anyone who wants to foster mathematical skills, with our attendees ranging from struggling students to those needing a challenge. Through an individualized approach, Kumon helps students of all skill levels gain confidence and feel good about the subject.
Kumon typically takes 15 to 20 minutes per day. We customize the plan of study for each student. Most of our students have busy schedules with school, sports, and music, and we want to enable them to fit Kumon easily into their daily routine. We discuss the individual needs of each student when we do the post-placement test interview.
The ease with which Kumon students routinely learn to perform basic operations and solve problems is perhaps the most dramatic testament to the effectiveness of the Kumon Method. Building self-confidence is the first step in our program – and with confidence comes success!
